Works with Photos & Videos You Already Have

Image

We all have terabytes upon terabytes of photos and videos, buried in our phones. Gathering dust in shoeboxes in our attics. And in who knows how many cloud services.

Our most meaningful moments, like weddings, first steps, fishing trips, and furry friends from long ago, are lost in that aether. And if we do find them, they are flat fragments, not quite like the moments we remember.

musubi brings these moments back to life, through the power of holograms.

How It Works

Image

musubi works with the photos and short videos (up to 30 seconds) you already have.

The free software included with every musubi purchase converts those photos and videos into holographic moments that appear to float within the display. This is made possible by a new type of machine-learning algorithm that constructs a fully three-dimensional scene from flat media.

But you won't have to think about any of that powerful technology under the hood. All you have to do is click "Convert", loading one, ten, or as many as 1,000 holographic moments into your musubi frame over USB-C in seconds.

The musubi software also gives you the option to have the background fully removed (for the feeling of a frozen-in-time memory), or to leave the background intact for more context, like you see below:

The conversion process takes just a few seconds and is done completely locally. Meaning you never have to wonder if the big AI companies will see your memories. They won’t.

Once loaded, musubi runs completely standalone. Playback does not require Wi-Fi.

musubi can run continuously via USB-C (included), or off of its internal rechargeable battery for up to 3 hours — making it easy to show, share, and gift.

There’s a whole lot of technology under the hood in both the hardware and software powering musubi, from our patented Hololuminescent™ Display technology to the advanced image processing techniques (including Gaussian splatting methods) we use. But you won’t have to think about any of that. Just click “Convert”.

And the Secret Menu

Image

musubi is designed to work out of the box with our free, easy-to-use software, for anyone regardless of technical skill. You don’t need to think about 3D capture, rendering pipelines, or spatial media formats. You don’t need special cameras. You just need to load in photos or videos you already have and it'll just... work. But if you do happen to have a technical background, musubi is capable of doing even more. Experimenting with NeRFs, Gaussian splats, or photogrammetry? We have some secret menu tools just for you.

  • 🆕 Import support for Gaussian splats
  • Unity Templates
  • Unreal Templates
  • Blender Templates
  • Adobe Premiere Pro & After Effects Motion Graphics Templates.
These and other advanced tools are available for free on our HLD documentation page here

Speaking of advanced Gaussian splats: shoutout to our friends at Tavio in Japan who are exploring studio-level Gaussian splat photography. Using a camera array and their own splat software, they were able to capture portraits of families with detail that is unlike anything we've ever seen.

Check out a couple amazing captures below, yes, in a musubi. →

But that's not all!

For those in the display industry who've been curious about our HLD technology, musubi is your chance to get a bite-size taste. It runs on the same core technology as our 16", 27" and 86" enterprise HLD displays, making this Kickstarter a unique opportunity to experience HLD tech firsthand before deploying on a large scale for digital signage.

We Know Holograms

Looking Glass has been building holographic displays for over a decade.

Image

  • Founded in 2014
  • World’s leading hologram & light field display company
  • Dozens of patents granted and pending across hardware and software
  • Millions of dollars of successfully fulfilled Kickstarter campaigns

We've built and shipped more advanced light field displays than any other group or company in the world. We've created dozens of our own software applications over the years. And we directly manage our manufacturing, supply chains, and fulfillment. This product isn’t a leap into the unknown for us, it’s a distillation of what we know how to do and have already shipped at scale.

All of us in the Looking Glass team are excited to finally be able to bring the magic of holograms to your home.

holograms from our team :)

Why Musubi?

Most folks know "musubi" as a food. One that a bunch of us on the Looking Glass team love.

But "musubi" has a deeper meaning too. In Japanese, musubi means "knot" or "bind": a connection across time and space. And that's what we hope the product - can do for you: connecting your memories to the future, through the power of holograms.

Also less deep - a few of us think the product kind of looks like spam musubi.

Frequently asked questions

When is musubi expected to ship?

The main production run of musubi orders are expected to ship in June. The special extremely limited rush shipments for Mother's Day (see reward tier above) will ship by air in late April / early May to arrive before Mother's Day.

Of course, as a Kickstarter project, we are working with estimated timelines so if there is any change to the schedule, backers will be the first to know.

What kind of content can I display on musubi?

musubi is primarily designed to display holograms generated automatically with our software from photos or videos up to 30 seconds that you already have.

For advanced users, musubi can also display other holographic content generated with our free plugins. See the "secret menu" section above.

How do I upload images/videos onto the musubi?

You’ll be able to upload your favorite images/videos using our free desktop app which will be available to download for PC and Mac on shipment.

Images are converted into holograms, where you will have the choice to keep or remove the background. For imported videos, you will be able to choose a hologram moment (which will be reconstructed in 3D automatically) within the timeline of the video. When that hologram video plays in musubi, the full video plays as normal — then pauses on a holographic freeze frame at the key moment.

The desktop application does not need to be wi-fi connected for the photos to convert. The desktop application operates entirely locally - no cloud-based AI processing needed - and generated holograms are loaded onto musubi using the provided USB-C to USB-C cable.

Do you use AI cloud services for your software?

No. Our free desktop application supplied with every purchase of amusubiis entirely local. Which means that all your photos and videos are entirely your own and will never be accessed by us or any of the big AI companies.

What software/OS is the musubi compatible with?

The musubi desktop app will be Mac and PC compatible.

What’s in the box?

Every musubi order will ship with:

  • 1 x musubi holographic photo frame
  • 1 x USB-C to USB-C cable
  • 1 x Power adapter

What orientation does musubi work in?

For now, the musubi is a portrait-oriented device. Content exported from our app will be formatted into a 9:16 ratio – portrait-oriented images and videos work best, but you can import any aspect ratio.

Does musubi have speakers?

Yes. musubi has an onboard speaker for playback of audio in video files.

Does musubi have a battery?

Yes. a USB-C rechargeable 2,000mAH battery, which enables wireless playback for up to 3 hours.

Does musubi have wifi or bluetooth?

No. musubi is designed to be easily loaded over USB-C from PC or Mac and then operated completely standalone.

Does musubi function as a secondary screen?

No. It is a standalone holographic photo and video frame.

How is this different from your other developer products (like Looking Glass Portrait or Looking Glass Go)?

Looking Glass Portrait and Go are developer kits powered by our light field display technology. Whereasmusubiis built to be a single-purpose consumer product designed specifically for showcasing holographic moments easily generated from photos and videos, powered by our Hololuminescent™ Display technology.

Is there a subscription required?

No. There is no subscription required.

This project is promoted by Jellop, the ad tech power behind the best Kickstarters with 3,500+ successful Kickstarter projects with over $1B raised between them.

Risks and challenges

Bringing a new hardware product to life always involves coordination across design, manufacturing, software, and logistics. While we have 10+ years of experience building and shipping holographic displays displays, musubi is a new product, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Manufacturing & Production

We’ve been designing and shipping holographic displays for over a decade. musubi builds on that foundation, and we are working with established manufacturing partners we’ve collaborated with before.

That said, tooling adjustments, component availability, or factory scheduling can occasionally introduce delays. We are closely managing production timelines and building buffer into our schedule to reduce risk wherever possible. That said, we've fulfilled all previous Kickstarters within schedule.

Components & Supply Chain

Like most consumer electronics, musubi relies on a small number of specialized components. Global supply chains can shift unexpectedly (hello, suez canal!). We are securing components early and maintaining contingency plans in case substitutions or timeline adjustments are needed.

If anything changes, we will communicate clearly and promptly.

Shipping & Fulfillment

International shipping and customs processing can sometimes create delays outside of our control. We plan to provide clear timelines, regular updates, and tracking information once orders leave our fulfillment partners.

We are structuring fulfillment in phases to ensure accuracy and quality control before full-scale shipping.

Software & Compatibility

musubi relies on software to render and display spatial media. While our team has extensive experience developing for Looking Glass displays, there is always the possibility of minor bugs or compatibility issues across devices and operating systems.

If issues arise, we will release updates and provide documentation and direct support to ensure musubi works as intended.

Transparency

If challenges arise, we will share updates openly. Our goal is not just to ship musubi, but to deliver it reliably, safely, and in a way that earns your trust.

Customer Support

Our team will be available to assist with setup, software, and troubleshooting. You’ll be able to reach us directly via email (support [at] lookingglassfactory.com) and through our community channels. We’re committed to making sure every musubi arrives safely and performs as promised.

Use of AI

This project is not raising funds to develop AI tools. However, musubi uses advanced image processing techniques, including Gaussian splatting, to help present standard 2D photos in spatial depth. These techniques use machine learning to reconstruct dimensional information from a single image or video, allowing it to be displayed holographically. All processing happens locally -- no cloud, no big AI platforms involved -- within our desktop application as part of preparing content for the frame.**Full transparency: a few of our images use AI-generated backgrounds. The musubi display itself, and everything you see inside it, is always the real thing, captured as-is.
